Do you have a desire to help students who are exceptional learners? 如果是这样的话, you may choose to major 特殊教育, one of two undergraduate majors housed in the 教育学院 at SPU. 西雅图 Pacific graduates 特殊教育 are working in classrooms 和 other settings throughout the region 和 the country, working to meet the needs of people with a wide range of learning challenges.

When you major 特殊教育, you will be prepared to work in various capacities with individuals who have disabilities. You can choose a program tailored for your interests, whether you want to pursue a career in pre-kindergarten through secondary (P–12) teaching, 残疾政策, 研究, or supporting individuals with disabilities in community settings. 的 教育学院 also partners with SPU's 神学院 to offer programs in special education that prepare you for a career in church ministries.

特殊教育专业: 教学 Track

In this teaching track of the 特殊教育 major, you will gain the knowledge 和 skills necessary to teach students with disabilities. To earn your Residency Teacher Certificate with an endorsement in P–12 特殊教育, you must complete requirements for:

  • 学士学位 特殊教育
  • 的 Residency Teacher Certification 程序

Washington state requires 特殊教育 majors to also have another "endorsement," or area in which teacher c和idates are prepared to teach. To minimize additional coursework requirements for a second endorsement, 特殊教育 majors are strongly advised to schedule an appointment with the 认证办公室 at their earliest convenience.  

You can complete all of these requirements in four years.

Residency Teacher Certification 程序

SPU has a reputation as one of the premier teacher preparation programs in the state 和 region. 的 professional program leading to a Residency Teacher Certificate at 西雅图 Pacific consists of four quarters of study:

Each of these quarters builds upon the preceding quarter, supporting a developmental approach to teacher preparation.

You may choose to pursue Residency Teacher Certification with an endorsement in Elementary Education or in a secondary content area(s) such as English Language Arts or Math. Review requirements for the Residency Teacher Certificate with an endorsement in P–12 特殊教育.

特殊教育专业: 一般强调

的 purpose of the 一般强调 track 特殊教育 is to prepare you to work with individuals with disabilities outside the classroom setting. This track is designed for students who want to pursue the following three interest areas:

  • Work with state, local, or nonprofit agencies that serve individuals with disabilities. This includes direct-service providers 和 advocacy groups.
  • Work with individuals 和 families with disabilities in faith-based or church settings.
  • Pursuit of advanced degrees 特殊教育 or related fields (e.g., a career as a 研究er in special education, 语言治疗师, an occupational therapist, or a physical therapist).

If you choose the 一般强调 track of the 特殊教育 major, you are required to complete an educational practicum to be arranged by you 和 your faculty advisor. Together, you will determine a placement in a community-based setting. This means you will work directly with individuals with disabilities; in schools; in agencies that serve students with disabilities; or alongside professors on 研究 projects dealing with disability issues.

Students in the 一般强调 track are encouraged to complete a minor in addition to their 特殊教育 major. 的 教育学院 recommends a minor in Psychology or Sociology.

特殊教育专业: Educational Ministry Emphasis

If you choose the Educational Ministry Emphasis track 特殊教育, you will benefit from a partnership with the 教育学院 和 the 神学院. Coursework from both programs provides you with a foundation in disability studies 和 educational ministry. You will complete a foundation course in theology along with a portion of a practicum in special education 和 a portion in theology. You are required to complete this educational practicum, which will be arranged by you 和 your faculty advisor.

When you graduate from this program, you are prepared to address disability issues in church 和 parachurch organizations. You will be prepared to implement methods for including all people in worship 和 church life.

Major Courses 和 Degree Requirements

A few of the courses that all 特殊教育 majors take include "Exceptionality in the Classroom," "Lifespan Developmental Psychology," 和 "教学 Students With Emotional 和 Behavioral Disabilities."

Review all 特殊教育 major courses 和 degree requirements: 的 教学 track 特殊教育 (基本的重点 or 二级重点) requires a minimum of 106 credits, with 36 upper-division credits. This includes the Residency Teacher Certification 程序. 的 一般强调 track requires a minimum of 45 credits, with 23 upper-division credits; 和 the Educational Ministry Emphasis requires a minimum of 47 credits, with 37 upper-division credits.

Entering the 特殊教育专业

You may enter the 特殊教育 major during your first quarter at SPU.  Entrance after your first quarter requires only good academic st和ing (2.0 or higher SPU cumulative GPA).  查阅 本科目录 for complete information on how 和 when to enter 和 什么 you must do to complete the program.
